proof of life
the future of social isn’t visible
this week, twitter (X, whatever) removed the ability to see someones likes. I’ve been on twitter for so long that I remember a world where likes weren’t visible to begin with. in recent years, likes went from a list of things a user enjoyed on platform to a tool used to curate your algorithm. the twitter algo is one of the most sensitive algorithms out there (which is why its my favorite for discovery), and liking, or sometimes even viewing, one tweet can completely alter your ‘for you’ feed. for a while, your likes were even visible in-feed which told us way too much information about the people we followed.
I didn’t know so many people used twitter for adult content…ANYWAY, I think the decision to hide likes for everyone is the smartest move a platform has made in years. I feel more honest with my likes (no more bookmarking, yay!) and my feed feels so much more *me* these days.my dear friend and digital soulmate Coco Mocoe recently made a prediction on the future of social — the next big platform to blow up will be the one that hides public metrics. no likes, no comments, no follower count, nothing. I’m a fan of this concept and we’ve seen platforms lean into this prediction with twitter removing likes and instagram making a few quiet moves (such as removing your ability to see all your mutuals & see every mutual that liked a post). I like that Instagram still shows you some information, but not all of it. it’s a step in the right direction IMO! with BRAT summer coming in hot, I’m excited for a digital renaissance.
my new roommate is a doberman and he’s about to change my life. more on this later.

grief
the past 3 years have been a never ending series of difficult blows. in the past 3 months, I’ve lost not one, but two grandparents. I am in so much pain and I feel so incredibly alone. I will share an essay for my grandfathers tomorrow.

The State of the Union is inspired by my forever inspiration and HBIC — Massie Block. Lisi Harrison, please don’t sue me. This has been my favorite format to write in since the Myspace days and I’m excited to bring it to Substack. Question — if I write this daily, would you want it in your email inbox, or just on Substack? LMK <3
